After releasing a few singles, SONIC AVENUES dropped a bomb in late 2009 with their debut LP on Ottawa's infamous Going Gaga Records. Within a few short months, the record had sold-out twice, including a European repress by Germany's fine Taken By Surprise and Sabotage Records. Two years later, after obliterating eardrums from stages across North America and Europe, they returned home to record a crushing follow-up, Television Youth, for prestigious Portland-based label Dirtnap Records. Featuring more of the over-driven guitars, infectious harmonized melodies and blazing 2-3 minute songs that powered their debut, the AVES have nonetheless pushed the limits into new territories with this latest offering. In short, Television Youth is punkier, poppier, louder and dirtier than anything they've done before. They have 3 things in their refrigerator: ketchup, beer and slime. THE MEAN JEANS were born when, at the ripe ages of 23 and 24, Jeans Wilder (skins, vox and smokes) and Billy Jeans (vox, riffs and spliffs) started playing their parent’s DC-area basements in the winter of 2006. This doesn’t count the Chattanooga Tennessee stop, where high schoolers stole their spot and played Blink 182 songs for over an hour. The Miller High Life wasn’t getting them drunk at all, and the guy who “booked” the show was weeping in his sister’s arms. Now THE JEANS already have 14 combined-inches of wax under their belts with the Rehab Records released self-titled affair and the “License To Chill” 45 from their new home at Dirtnap Records (who you should congratulate for their 10th year on this planet). Scrappy, melodic, and somtimes jangly garagepunk that is fast, catchy, and high-energy --as-hell, but also maintains a thoughtful vibe throughout.

Since releasing their debut LP, Screens, which quickly sold out and was generally well-received by just about everyone, a lot of has been going on in Low Culture’s world. 3/4ths of the band has relocated from Las Cruces, NM to Portland, OR, with the 4/4th soon to follow. They’ve released 7”s on Dirtnap, Dead Broke, and La-Ti-Da Records. They found a new bass player in Chicago transplant Jay Castaldi (MOTO, Lynyrd’s Innards, more). ½ of the band has helped form killer local hardcore band Macho Boys. Singer/Guitarist Chris Mason has released tons of essential records on his great (and easy to confuse with Dirtnap!) Dirt Cult Records label. They’ve done some touring, including high profile shows like the Dirtnap Records Anniversary, Awesome Fest, Ottawa Explosion, and more. Just livin’ the life, ya know?

On Places To Hide, Low Culture really nails the delicate balance between building on the band’s existing strengths and branching out into new territory, while not losing sight of what made people like ‘em in the first place. Musically, many of the songs sound like they could fit in well on Screens, with others sound like nothing they’ve ever done. The band’s trademark personal, somewhat depressive lyrics still set the mood of the record, although many of the songs also tackle social/political issues much more directly than in the past. The production, by Stan Wright at Portland’s Buzz Or Howl Studios (Red Dons, Criminal Code, Pierced Arrows, tons more) accentuates the band’s more “punk” (as opposed to garage) side. I mean yeah both subscribe to their own subgenres, but we all know that they both pledge allegiance to Napalm Death. So when they come together in the wonderfully ADD format that is the 7 inch split you know that you're in for a good time. Cloud Rat and Crevasse are bands that embrace the frantic side of the genre, push us forward as fans and remind us why we got involved in this in the first place.

The first side of the split is business as usual for Cloud Rat, though perhaps a bit more frenetic. It shows us a punker side of Cloud Rat and also a more surprising side of the band. I mean, just listen to their cover of Electric Deads Fish In A Pool, who ever would have expected Cloud Rat to come out swinging with a song that heavily features clean vocals? By the same token, Crevasse's side of things is equally insane. The rallying cry of "I hate you" on their B side opener, Infinite Regress speaks to the inherent madness of the band. At the same time their penchant for noise helps to make this split truly twisted.

Both bands here have found a return to their very base roots. Though the tracks are certainly featured through their unique styles there is a certain sense of punk rock oblivion that they both readily embrace. When it comes down to it we are all here because of 70s bands like Dead Boys and Budgie, so if we can embrace that then we are moving on to something greater. Cloud Rat and Crevasse use this split to represent the best of old and new, moving the entire genre forward but never forgetting why we got here.

"Big, groovy, polytoxikoman, psychedelic, punk rock nightmare debut long player by Berlins' unpredictable, multi-dysfunctional, multinational boy group. In a word, it's much more sophisticated than most of what gets called hardcore nowadays... it has a lot more in common with 90s bands like Talk Is Poison, Deathreat, Artimus Pyle... these were all bands that clearly had a foot firmly planted in the traditions and aesthetics of early 80s hardcore, but didn't sound like a rehash in any way, shape or form. They felt like they were pushing both themselves as bands and the scene as a whole forward into new and exciting territory. I don't want to overstate my case about Lift the Mask and say that it's revolutionizing hardcore or anything like that, but at the same time listening to this record makes you clearly see how much bands today tend to look backwards rather than forwards. Just take their sophomore set, Nothing to Nowhere. Despite the glum and giving-up album title and the bleak nature of most of its melodies, there’s a spark surging throughout the LP that suggests the death-rock crew isn’t ready to give up on life just yet.

Even so, opener “Between Two Lines” is a postpunk funeral dirge full of morose bass lines and God-and-government-critiquing lyrics that leave the protagonist condemned to the other side of the fence. But despite apparently being branded a traitor, there’s hope in singer Brian Gustavson’s voice as he sticks to his ideals.

Punchier numbers like “Passages” and “Decompensation” suggest the influence of Southern Death Cult and the Sisters of Mercy—the latter coming across like “Temple of Love” as sung by an early-days Ian Astbury. While the bulk of the LP gets by on these kinds of dour-but-driving fist-pumpers, “Return to the Sea” closes out Nothing to Nowhere with an epic arrangement that wrangles eerily textured six-string licks, a chaotic and clattering crescendo, and tribal tom-tom thudding into a gracefully gloomy finale.

Spectres fooled us, all right. Now that I have that out of the way I can say GET BOTH OF THESE RECORDS RIGHT NOW!!!! Seriously, I can't remember the last time I've fallen this head over heels for a band. Pura Mania have one of the most original, exciting sounds I've heard in ages... a slightly quirky but utterly unique combination of melodic 80s Spanish punk like Eskorbuto, tough hardcore, oi!, and a little dash of new wave. I know that "description" isn't very descriptive at all, but Pura Mania are a very difficult band to pin down... the vocals and the drums are very simple, straightforward, and tough, but on their best songs like "Musica Para Genta Fea," the guitars and bass go off in a completely different direction, recalling the dynamic interplay of post-punk / new wave greats like Wire and Magazine. Basically, it's like Pura Mania have made this band explicitly to appeal to my personal tastes, simultaneously tickling the parts of my brain that crave tough hardcore and oi!, simple and catchy melodies, and the interesting instrumental dynamics of post-punk. It's crazy that Pura Mania are this relentlessly good, but nothing about the packaging or presentation really screams "this is some next-level shit." It's doubtful that these guys will become the next big thing or that anyone will think you're cooler for owning these records (except for me!), but those in the know will insist that these are two of the best records to be released in the year 2014. Utterly, utterly essential... highest possible recommendation!

Apocalypse Pop, waiting for the apocalypse to...drop...

Suspect Parts is the brainchild of two exiled Americans, one Brit and a German who managed to tame their inner demons with buzzsaw punk/powerpop, a cotton candy-meets-razorblade concoction that goes down surprisingly smooth.

Ex and current members of bands like The Briefs, Clorox Girls, Maniac, Ripchord, Radio Dead Ones and Red Dons – they are Suspect, they come from Suspect Parts.

Combining 60's pop and bubblegum with late 70's California beach punk and powerpop, Suspect Parts have something brewing that can't be ignored.
